My areas of research are character rigging and simulation as well as real-time animation. My research in the workplace has included fur, feathers and rigging and muscle development. I am also particularly interested in developing ideas from discrete differential geometry and using them for applications in the animation industry. Currently I am working on a project to develop tools for fluid simulation in a production environment.

‚ÄúImaging-based damage detection in archives materials‚ÄĚ
A state-of-the-art THZ pulsed semiconductor-based imaging system has been developed by Teraview specifically to monitor the thickness, uniformity and density of laminar and coated structures and to identify structural features such as cracks, dislocations and delaminations. Due to its properties, combining a significant depth of penetration into opaque organic materials with a significant amount of chemical information, THZ imaging could significantly improve the present practice of structural and chemical monitoring of heritage objects of organic origin.

An Imaging Tool for Energy Efficient Communities
of the Future
A project sponsored by British Research Establishment (BRE)¬†The depletion of fuel reserves and the concerns on the energy security that stem from it, sustainable development and global warming have increased the focus on the efficiency of the generation and delivery of the energy to the communities. In this scenario, renewable energy technologies and district heating are considered to be a very efficient form of generation and distribution of energy, offering the potential for considerable savings of carbon.
The aim of the project is to produce a tool that is to assist in the appraisal of the community energy systems at concept stage on the basis of environmental and energy metrics. The tool would have the capability to capture the implications of the integration of different energy sources and assist in the engineering optimisation of supply and demand through thermal storages, low temperature heat supply and improved building performance.
The Urban Climate ‚Äď An Integrated Approach to Building Performance and Urban Design
Increasing urbanisation and projected climate change have led to the need forenhanced design guidance for the built environment. Designers and planners need to be aware of the effects that urban climates will have on theperformance of their buildings. In turn, they should also take intoconsideration the impact of their developments on their local exterior climates.The aim of the project is to produce simplified and robust decision support tools to assess these impacts. Coming to academia from an industry in metrology, working in new concepts for real-time controllers at Renishaw PLC.¬†My role is to combine academic research with Renishaw's interests to develop new systems to further their products.
As part of progression to academic research I am required to complete two research projects, currently they are:¬†
- ¬†Micro-Augmentations in Museums. This group project looks to the subtle calculated use of technology to apply the smallest of interaction to stimulate the particpants interest in items of importance as they walk through a museum.
- Graphics Passthrough. Virtual Platforms that can access real physical hardware for graphics accleration and GP-GPU processing.
I am also very keen to apply technology based solutions to real-world problems, specifically the processes involved in caputuring the requirements, the team work and its dynamics, and the qualitive/quantative assessment techniques of the proposed solution. I am interested in the mentality that takes a real-world problem and uses an engineered approach to create an engineered solution.
Outside of academia and industry I am keen to futher develop the fun side of computer science, media-servers, streamers and anything that employs technology for entertainment.
"Analysis and Manipulations of 3D Model Collections"
Collections of 3D models are becoming increasingly prominent, with sites such as Google Warehouse and Turbo Squid offering hundreds of thousands of models to the public. While these collections can help accelerate the pipeline of building a 3D game or a virtual world, the collections can be daunting to use with available tools. Our goal is to make the task of 3D modelling using these publicly available collections easier for everyone. The main challenges are to efficiently search the collections for relevant 3D models and to enable the use of these models or their parts for modelling tasks with little manual manipulation.
The problem of efficiently searching a collection of 3D shapes generates other questions such as how to assess the similarity of objects in order to retrieve relevant results or how to intelligently learn the user‚Äôs preferences according to his previous actions. The problem of bringing the models into a state where they can be used easily raises other topics such as how to bring objects to the same pose so they can be evaluated by the user, or how can the actual quality of the models be assessed. Our contribution will be to give answers to such questions and other relevant problems in this area.
